Important precautions for safe weight loss!!!

It is so very important when choosing a diet, or weight loss program, that you chose one that is not only going to help you lose weight, but is also going to help improve your health.  Or even better, a program that is focused on improving your health, and the weight just comes off as a natural result.  I have read about a woman who had gastric bypass surgery, who ended up being so dehydrated and malnourished she started having muscle wasting, needed TPN (food infused through an IV), then went into liver failure.  She then developed cancer, and had to suffer through chemotherapy, and then passed away.  I will put the link if you want to read her blog, but I will warn you, I cried almost all the way through it.
It is soooo important to make sure you are getting all the vital nutrients that your body needs, especially while you are losing weight.
I was having a conversation with a teenage girl the other day, who wants to lose 20 lbs.  She said to me that she just wants to find something that will fill her up, and help curb her hunger, so she doesn't have to eat food.  I got closed to her, looked her straight in the eye, and said, "You have to eat real food."  I went on to explain some simple nutritional concepts to her, and the importance of eating the right foods.  I am sure we will have to have this conversation again, more than once.
Many people become concerned about losing weight when they only need to lose 20 lbs.  Instead of focusing on losing weight, they should focus on improving their health; eating nutrition packed foods, instead of trying to eat less food.
Be very cautious of weight loss programs that consist of meal replacement shakes, prepackaged foods, strictly restricting calories, or eliminating whole foods groups.  This includes any surgery intended to restrict the size of the stomach.  Often these diets are too restrictive, and are similar to starvation.  Can you lose weight by starving yourself?  Of course you can, but there are also health risks associated restricting nutrients.  And too many of these restrictive diets are similar to starvation, or almost starvation, allowing just enough food, so it is not complete starvation, but not enough nutrients for optimal health & well being.  And why are we trying to lose weight in the first place?  Yes, to look better, but also to feel better, to become healthier.  Restricting yourself of essential nutrients does not lead to optimal health, so even if it leads to weight lose, it really doesn't help reach to ultimate goal to becoming healthier.
There are so many things that we need to change in the "Average American diet" that there is not enough room to put them all in this one blog entry.  I have some basic tips at my Optimal Health website.
The main thing to focus on is getting enough essential vitamins & minerals that your body needs for optimal functioning.  Basically, more raw fruits & vegetables.  Less fats, sugars, and simple carbs that have no vitamins.  Choosing nutrition packed foods, instead of nutrition-less foods.  It is like buying a computer. Do you want one that has only a mother board, a power supply, and a 6 gig hard drive, 128 ram, and a floppy drive, and possibly even a virus?  Or, if for the same amount of money, you could chose one with all the upgrades: 512 RAM or more, cdr/dvdr combo, with 80 gig hard drive, loaded with tons of software & all the cool features you want, and NO viruses?  Of course, you would chose the one with all the upgrades.  Same with food.  But most of us chose the empty calorie foods that have no upgrades and possibly even harmful ingredients, because it is fast, quick, and readily available at any fast food place, or in our freezer or cupboard  in the form of prepackaged meals, or meal replacement shakes.

One more important thing to remember when choosing weight loss program.  Beware of weight loss programs that can lead to rapid weight loss.  Besides the restriction of vital nutrients, and possible side effect of whatever chemicals they might be adding to a rapid weight loss supplement, there is the danger of toxin build up, weakened immune system, pH imbalance and other conditions that put you at risk for CANCER.  Jessica is not the first person I know of to have rapid weight loss, and then develop cancer and die.  WOW, just when they think that finally they are going to lose weight to get their body healthy, they develop cancer.  I am going to go into more detail about this in my next blog, so check back.
